Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer is not the man he used to be. Dyer has lost more than 35 pounds and kept it off for nearly two years. Like so many people, Dyer has struggled with his weight for his entire adult life, but as he approached his 50th birthday, he knew he needed to make a change. As the face of one of the largest and most-visited cities (50 million people come to Orlando every year), Dyer says he didn’t like what he was seeing in the mirror. Now, he works out several times a week with a trainer as well as on his own, attending yoga classes and even taking part in stand-up paddle boarding.
Not only has he committed himself to health and fitness, he has made it easy for workers across the city to join him. There’s a gym in the basement of City Hall and Dyer encourages his employees and Orlando residents to ride their bikes to work, to spend time outside and to lead active lifestyles. The city has wellness programs and seminars and has even been recognized as one of Orlando’s healthiest workplaces.
